A mixture of 1,5-dibromopentane (23 g, 0.1 mol) and NaOH (4.0 g, 0.1 mol) in water (100 cm3 ) was heated under reflux while piperidine (8.5 g, 0.1 mol) was added dropwise over 30 min. After heating for a further 30 min, the mixture was cooled and an ice-cold soution of NaOH (20 g) in water (50 cm3) was added. Partial evaporation of the resulting solution gave a colourless solid which was filtered off and recrystallised from ethanol to give the product (16.0 g, 68%) as colourless crystals, mp 322° C(lit.,2 311–312° C); ?H 3.37 (8 H, t, J 7), 1.85 (8 H, m) and 1.65 (4 H, quintet, J 7); ?C 62.1 (NCH2), 23.8 (NCH2CH2CH2) and 21.6 (NCH2CH2).
